Look out! QCKRNU now has a GPU folding!

QCKRNU is looking to push into Aussie Rules Footy's Top 10 and beyond with the addition of a folding capable GPU to his computer!

QCKRNU has had his new XFX 9800 GX2 NVIDIA graphics card for a while now, though it hasn't been able to be installed in his computer. The problem was his old power supply just wouldn't have been up to the task of delivering the necessary wattage his new GPU needed. Recently though, he got himself a new 1kw power supply, and today, installed the graphics card.

I went through the installation process with him, following the official GPU guide for Windows, and since he's using Windows 7, we just installed as per Vista instructions. Although the 9800 GX2 is a dual-GPU card, he's only got the one monitor for now, and therefore cannot fold on both GPUs. There is a possibility a dummy DVI plug or something might be able to let the 2nd GPU fold, but either way, you need to have the desktop extended for the

Jens_Klausen has added a 2nd GPU!

Future Team Leader, Jens_Klausen has recently added a second ASUS EN9600GT SILENT graphics card to his Computer, boosting his PPD (points per day) output even further!

With his current PPD output of ~4,000, he'll most likely overtake 3rd placed RoXeD tomorrow to continue his push up the team leaderboard!

Previously running a quad-core system with a single GPU, he's told me that the NVIDIA GPU client no longer requires a dedicated CPU core to feed it, so he's squeezed in another GPU for more output. The rest of his CPU time he uses to contribute to the BOINC Distributed Computing program, running under the name Jens.

GPU folders combine to break Petaflop mark

Well, its been going to happen now for a while, but the GPU client folders have finally got a Petaflop to claim their own. It took approximately 9,000 GPU folders to make the Petaflop, so no doubt even a doubling in GPU folder numbers will keep pushing the projects total higher and higher.

Total for the project now sits at 2.7 Petaflops, coming from ~ 327,000 'active' folders. Since last reporting on the OS Stats a month ago, 17,000 extra active folders have come on board to crunch data in the name of Protein folding research. It'd be great to see half a million active participants by this time next year, but we'll take any amount of newcomers, as long as the project keeps building.

Folding@Home over 2 Petaflops again and this time not stopping there

With the recent release of a GPU2 beta client for NVIDIA graphics cards, the OS Stats has soared ~250 Teraflops to a total project power of ~ 2.2 Petaflops!

The combined GPU stats (a GPU2 client already existed for ATI cards) now sit at around 450 Teraflops... Not bad for only ~4,000 active GPU folders. The good thing to see is that the project now has over 310,000 active folders, edging closer to 320,000.

Hopefully with more and more clients of different hardware compatibility, the project can accumulate more participants, push progress, and result in new research papers being released.

Congrats to Vijay's Folding@Home development team for the release of this latest client and also to those who are currently folding with a graphics card.
